Sanding Equipment

High-quality wood flooring sanding equipment is essential for professional hardwood floor contracting and installation jobs. The sanding process prepares worn wood surfaces for stain and finish while evening out imperfections. Using the right sander for each sanding stage results in smooth, attractive floors.

The main types of wood floor sanding machines include:

Drum Sanders

These heavy-duty sanders feature a motor-driven rotating drum wrapped in sandpaper that aggressively removes flooring material. Drum sanders come in different widths from 22″ to 40+” and are used for leveling and flattening large floor sections during initial sanding.

Disc Edgers

Disc edge sanders use circular abrasive discs spinning at high speeds to smooth and shape flooring edges near walls, corners, and tight spaces a drum sander can’t reach. Various grit discs get into crevices.

Orbital & Random Orbital Sanders

These versatile electric sanders use oscillating padded plates beneath abrasive sheets to clean up smaller areas and blend sanded regions. Some restore fine detailing.

Multi-Disc Sanders

Similar to auto bodyshop tools, multi-disc sanders rapidly flatten uneven areas using three or more rotating abrasive discs in sequence. The discs also polish.

Belt Sanders & Grinders

Belt sanders feature continuous loop abrasive belts tensioned between two rollers to aggressively shape wood and remove scratches, spots, etc. Fast material removal.

High-end wood flooring sanding machines share common traits of powerful motors, precision engineering, durable metals and composites, dust ports, accessories, and user adjustments that make surface preparation easier. Investing in quality sanding equipment leads to enhanced productivity, consistency, and professional looking floors. Many floor sanders are made in Germany. With proper machine know-how and some skill, sanding wood floors to perfection is achievable.
